Rick Saylor examines data on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's orbit insertion around the moon. Saylor served as the flight director for LRO's lunar orbit insertion. The photograph was taken inside a control room at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

The photo was taken June 23, the day that LRO reached the moon after a four-and-a-half-day journey. Engineers at Goddard confirmed the spacecraft's lunar orbit insertion at 6:27 a.m. EDT.

The LRO satellite will explore the moon's deepest craters, examining permanently sunlit and shadowed regions, and provide understanding of the effects of lunar radiation on humans. LRO will also search for natural resources and potential landing sites that would make possible a permanent human presence on the moon.
