Dr. Jana Thayer - Manager for the Large Area Telescope flight software group (SLAC)

Image of Jana Thayer Dr. Jana Thayer is the Manager for the Large Area Telescope flight software group at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in California. She is also a member of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) collaboration.

Since 2004, Jana has participated in the testing of the LAT data acquisition electronics and has transitioned to a role in flight software and flight operations for the LAT Instrument Science Operations Center. In the LAT operations position on-console during activation of the LAT instrument, she enjoyed watching the LAT come alive for the first time after launch.

Jana received her Ph.D. in high energy particle physics from The Ohio State University in 2002 for her research on inclusive radiative penguin decays of B mesons at the CLEO experiment. She continued this work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the University of Rochester searching for new physics through a precision measurement of the photon energy spectrum in these decays. While at CLEO, she participated in the upgrade to the data acquisition system and related infrastructure and was subsequently responsible for the care and feeding of parts of the CLEO detector.

In 1996, Jana received a B.S. in Engineering Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she also received the Laura B. Eisenstein Award as the Outstanding Woman Student in Physics that year. In 1995 she was a co-recipient of the Undergraduate Outreach Achievement Award for her work as a founding member of the Physics Van outreach program.
