Greiner is an astrophysicist with prime interest in Gamma-ray astronomy, and sporadic activities also at near-infrared, optical and X-ray wavelengths. Scientific interests include Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB), Microquasars, and X-ray binaries. While primarily being focused on multi-wavelength observations and data analysis, he recently has acted as principal investigator of GROND, a dedicated multi-channel near-infrared/optical instrument for GRB afterglow observations.

Dr. Greiner received his PhD in 1988 from the Institute of Space Research, Berlin. He graduated from the University Leipzig in 1984 with a diploma degree in Physics. He has worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics between 1990-1996 primarily with data from the Compton Imaging Telescope (COMPTEL) and the Roentgen Satellite (ROSAT). Between 1997 and 2001 he worked at the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam, and returned back to MPE thereafter. Since 2004 he is heading the Gamma-Ray Group which has a long history and involvement in e.g. the European Space Agency's COS-B satellite, COMPTEL, Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET), Ulysses, INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) and now Fermi.

After the retirement of research scientist Giselher Lichti of MPE, Grenier took over the responsibility as the Fermi Burst Monitor Principal Co-Investigator.
