Program Description

Starfinder Series - Program 24: "Fingerprints of Light"

Target: Grades 6-10

Length: 15 minutes

Guide: Available from the Central Operation of Resources for Educators (CORE) (440) 775-1400 or http://core.nasa.gov

Internet: http://www.stsci.edu/resources

In this program, students are introduced to the three types of spectra: continuous, bright line or emission spectra, and dark line or absorption spectra. Just as each person has a unique, identifying fingerprint, so does each star and object in the sky. Students are shown diffraction gratings and a spectroscope as tools to view spectra of light.
