As an Engineer and Project Manager (PM) at NASA Langley Research Center in the Office of Education (OED)/Office of Human Capital Management (OHCM), Barnes is currently the Agency PM for NASA ESTEEM (Earth Systems, Technology, and Energy Education for MUREP-Minority University Research and Education Project). NASA ESTEEM, formerly NASA Innovations in Climate Education (NICE), is a partnership with the Science Mission Directorate, as well as outside agencies NSF (National Science Foundation) and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) to increase climate literacy and STEM education across the nation.
Monica is also the Center Lead for NASA Internships, Fellowships, and Scholarships (NIFS) in OED. OED is the lead organization for creating innovation and technological strategies for the STEM education and partnerships, fostering the development of innovative partnerships with education, industry, and other research organizations to develop NASA’s 21st century workforce and promote STEM education. Barnes also works with the Creativity and Innovation Design team to instruct and lead various courses for enhancing center employees and contractors creativity, and move their ideas forward.
Barnes received her Master’s Degree in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University, a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech, and has worked for the government for over 33 years, with exciting experiences as an engineering cooperative education student with NASA LaRC, and within various Naval organizations during her career as a civil servant. She has received numerous awards and recognition, both for superior performance as an individual and within her various work groups, including her highest honor, which has been to receive the infamous Collier Trophy, the aerospace industry equivalent of an Oscar.
