The annual agricultural fire season is underway at the base of the snow-capped Himalaya Mountains in northwestern India. Smoke from fires in the states of Punjab (closest to Pakistan) and Haryana (to the southeast) are seen in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite on Oct. 17, 2015, at 08:05 UTC (4:05 a.m. EDT). Actively burning fires are marked with red dots. The smoke appears in a light brown color and was blowing in a southeasterly direction.
