Smoke and heat from fires occurring in the Top End of Australia’s Northern Territory detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite on June 27 at 1:45 UTC (9:45 p.m. EDT/U.S. on June 26). The multiple red pixels are heat signatures (red) detected by MODIS.
In the northern area, also known as Top End, fires were detected on Bathurst and Tiwi Islands and around Darwin. According to the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service, the fires around Darwin were “grass and scrub fires.” The smoke appears to be a light brown color.
