Dust, Fires, and Smoke Across Western Africa

Dust, fires and smoke across Western Africa
As the agricultural season continues in Western Africa, fires dot the landscape from Guinea to Benin.

As the agricultural season continues in Western Africa, fires dot the landscape from Guinea to Benin. A thick pall of dust and smoke still rise from the fires that still burn or from fires that have been put out and may still be smoldering. Visible-light images were taken from the VIIRS instrument aboard NASA-NOAA’s Suomi NPP satellite on Dec. 05, 2015. The VIIRS image showed the heat signatures from fires (in red) across a large section of Western Africa across Guinea, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo and Benin.

VIIRS collects visible and infrared imagery and global observations of land, atmosphere, cryosphere and oceans. NASA image courtesy Jeff Schmaltz, NASA Goddard Rapid Response Team, GSFC. Caption by Lynn Jenner.
