A lightning strike on August 12, 2015 started a wildfire in the Malheur National Forest in Central Oregon. At present the fire is 52% contained and has ravaged 105,684 acres. Hot, dry weather with winds have been fanning this fire, however showers are expected today.
This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on September 01, 2015. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red.
