Russian Wildfire Season Heats Up Again

Aqua image of Russian wildfires
As recently as September 07, 2016 it looked as though the Russian wildfire season may be slowing down. That is definitely not the case now.

As recently as September 07, 2016 it looked as though the Russian wildfire season may be slowing down. That is definitely not the case now. This image taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on September 13, 2016 shows a glut of fires spreading across the Russian landscape. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red. Perhaps weather had played a factor in the seemingly suppressed image from September 07, but now the fire season appears to be raging on with many areas on fire and smoke spewing from the hot spots in this image.
