Siberia is large Russian province that covers much of northern Asia. The province includes a variety of terrain such as the Ural, Altai and Verkhoyansk mountain ranges, tundra and coniferous forest. To the east and southeast of the area lies the Bering Sea.

On Aug. 11 at 8:10 p.m. EDT (Aug. 12 at 00:10 UTC) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument that flies aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured an image of smoke from several large wildfires. The large red outlines indicate the heat signature from the fire. The smoke, blowing to the southwest in thick streams, appears as a light brown color.
