Fires Detected off the Coast of Northwestern Australia

Fires on islands off the coast of Australia
All of the fires in the satellite image taken by Terra appear to be on the islands that are off the coast of Western Australia.

It’s summer “down under” and as such fire season is underway. Strangely enough in this image taken by the Terra satellite on January 15, 2016 all of the fires in the image appear to be on the islands that are off the coast of Western Australia. NASA’s Terra satellite collected this natural-color image with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, MODIS, instrument. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red and all of these appear to be on Serrurier Island, Barrow Island, Middle Island and Legendre Island (which is across from the Dolphin Island Nature Reserve) and a few others.
