Advisory Committees and Boards
National Academies Advisory Boards and Reports
In 1916, the National Academy of Sciences organized
The National
Research Council to associate the broad community of science and technology with the
Academy's purposes of seeking further knowledge and advising the federal
government. Functioning in accordance with general policies determined by the
Academy, the National Research Council has become the principal operating
agency of both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of
Engineering in providing services to the government, the public, and the
scientific and engineering communities. Both the Academies and the Institute of Medicine jointly administer the National Research Council.
The Exploration Systems Mission Directorate primarily uses two National Research Council boards:
The Space Studies Board (SSB) and the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board (ASEB).
Many of the reports below are produced through joint activities between the two boards.

NASA Advisory Council (NAC)
The
NASA Advisory Council (The “Council”) provides the NASA Administrator with counsel and advice on programs and issues of importance to the Agency. The council consists of six committees, Aeronautics, Audit and Finance, Exploration, Human Capital, Sciences, and Space Operations. Each committee conducts fact-finding sessions throughout the year in an effort to gain broad understanding of current NASA issues and future mission implementation plans. The committees then bring this information to the full Council in order that specific recommendations may be prepared.
The NASA Advisory Council Exploration Committee focuses on the goals and challenges of NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate. The high-caliber technological, engineering, management and scientific expertise of the Committee members brings fresh perspectives to the complex issues confronting the Exploration Directorate. The Committee convenes several times yearly in public sessions to hear briefings from Exploration Directorate personnel and other subject matter experts, and Committee members participate in additional fact-finding efforts. The Chair presents to the NASA Advisory Council the Committee's recommendations pertaining to Exploration Systems Mission Directorate issues.
