Summertime Fires in Chile’s National Parks

Fires in Chile
NASA's Aqua satellite captured an image of smoke from several fires burning in several of Chile's parks

NASA’s Aqua satellite captured an image of smoke from several fires burning in several of Chile’s parks. Smoke was seen from fires near Hornopiren National Park, Corcovado National Park and Pumalin Park, all in the Los Lagos Region of Chile. Smoke from fires was also detected on Chiloe Island, located west of the mainland.

This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard the Aqua satellite on February 25, 2015. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’ thermal bands, are outlined in red.
