The six-member Expedition 38 crew worked international science, continued unloading a Russian resupply craft and participated in an emergency simulation drill. The long-term residents also exercised to counteract the effects of microgravity and worked to maintain the space station’s systems.
Flight Engineers Koichi Wakata and Rick Mastracchio scanned each other’s eyes at the beginning of the day for the Ocular Health Tonometry Test with support from ground personnel. Past space station crew members have experienced changes to their vision while on orbit and doctors want to understand the phenomena and mitigate its risk to future astronauts.
Wakata along with Flight Engineer Mike Hopkins participated in an event with Japanese media and an astronomer to discuss comet ISON and Earth and space observations from the station.
Mastracchio also repaired a Thermolab control unit battery compartment to establish a power connection inside Europe’s Columbus lab module. The Thermolab experiment monitors a crew member’s body heat and heart activity during exercise.
Hopkins purged the Sabatier water generator of carbon dioxide and liquid water. The Sabatier extracts water from the station’s environment and eliminates the need to deliver water using spacecraft
Hopkins also joined Mastracchio for more cargo transfer activities from the ISS Progress 53 resupply craft docked to the Zvezda service module. The Russian cargo craft arrived at the station Friday after a four day trip to test a new automated rendezvous system.
Commander Oleg Kotov and Flight Engineer Sergey Ryazanskiy continued more work on the NAPOR-mini experiment. The experiment tests new technology downlinking video taken of the Earth from the Zvezda service module to Russian ground stations. The videos could help scientists monitor ecological and environmental conditions from the space station.
Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin transferred data gathered for the Identification experiment to a laptop computer. The experiment investigates the pressures on the space station that occur due to reboosts, spacecraft dockings, spacewalks and crew members exercising.
Finally, the entire crew gathered together to practice an emergency simulation drill with participation from mission controllers. The crew practices emergency communication and procedures in response to a predetermined scenario such as pressure leak.
