Oak Ridge, Tenn., Native Kim Whitson Named Director of NASA Marshall Center's Office of Procurement
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Kim E. Whitson, a native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., recently was named director of the Office of Procurement at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
Whitson is responsible for all stages of the Marshall Center's contracting process, including solicitation, evaluation, negotiations, awards and contract management -- both at Marshall and at associated contractor facilities. He assumed his position in April 2012.
He served as acting director of Marshall's Office of Procurement from October 2011 until his current appointment. From 2008 to 2011, Whitson was deputy director of Marshall's Office of Procurement. He served as manager of the Engineering Support Office in Marshall's Office of Procurement from 2004 to 2008, responsible for planning and directing procurement of products and services for the Engineering Directorate. From 2002 to 2004, he managed procurement activities and contracts for the Space Shuttle Projects Office and the Flight Projects Directorate.
As chief of the Research and Development Support Division of the Office of Procurement from 1998 to 2002, Whitson was responsible for procurement activities for several Marshall organizations. In 2001, he was selected to participate in a NASA Headquarters Industry Rotation Program for one year. During the assignment, he worked with the Product Marketing organization at the Georgia Power Company in Atlanta, assisting the group in developing, launching and managing different products.
From 1993 to 1998, Whitson held various positions in Marshall’s Office of Procurement, including chief of the Solid Rocket Motor Branch, and chief of the Policy and Review Branch. He provided support as a procurement analyst to NASA's Procurement Office in Washington from 1991 to 1993.
Whitson began his career at the Marshall Center in 1988 as a contract specialist in the Space Shuttle External Tank Branch. Before joining NASA, he was a contract administrator for the Defense Logistics Agency at McDonnell Douglas in Huntington Beach, Calif., from 1984 to 1988.
Whitson earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1983.
During his career at NASA, he has received various awards and honors, including an Exceptional Service Medal in 2011 for exemplary support of NASA's Baseline Service Level action -- an agency initiative to review and make recommendations on institutional organizations' resources/staffing levels. In 2009 and 2002, he was presented Director’s Commendations for dedicated service. In 1998, he was recognized as NASA’s Contract Manager of the Year, and in 1997 he received the Exceptional Achievement Medal for outstanding management and leadership of procurement resources supporting critical project offices within the Space Shuttle Program.
