Center Director Lesa Roe was into the spirit of Hollywood when she presented
Center Team Awards at the Pearl Young Theater on Wednesday.
It was a natural.
Among the award winners was the Partnership with Utopia Planitia Films, the
organization that handled NASA Langley's liaison with "The Box," a motion
picture that was shot at the center in February.
"They have 1,000 times the heart of the Oscar," Roe said.
Besides the Partnership, awards were given to the World Trade Organization
Proceedings team, the Thermal Protection System Project team and the
ARES/TDT Grond Wind Loads Check Out Model team.
The World Trade Organization Proceedings team, led by recently retired Bill
Willshire, helped the U.S. defend itself in a dispute with the European
Communities over allegations of government subsidies for American aviation.
Besides Willshire, the team was comprised of Linda Blackburn, Vicki Crisp,
Tamara Croom , John Davis, Laura Eure, Rosemary Froelich, Kenneth Goetzke,
Garland Gouger, Sam Morello, Elizabeth Plentovich, Amy Radford, Liliana
Richwine, Lori Rowland, Wally Sawyer, Darrel Tenney, Mary Yeager and Sherri Yokum. Also,
George Price of the Federal Aviation Administration, Frank Aguilera, Kenneth
Cobb and Catherine Schulbach of NASA's Ames Research Center; David McBride
of NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center; Carol Ginty, Gary Seng and Robert
Shaw of NASA's Glenn Research Center; Alexander Bakos, James Balinskas,

The Thermal Protection System Project team, led by Max Blosser, was charged
with a range of testing duties for the head shield for Orion.
"When Orion reenters the atmosphere time after time you'll be able to
remember your contribution to that," Blosser told the group.
Besides Blosser, the team was made up of Carlito Barnes, Keith Bird, Tracy
Bridges, Ralph Buehrle, Charles Burtnette, Timothy Cannella, Richard Cooper,

The ARES/TDT Ground Wind Loads Check Out Model team, led by Donald Keller,
was charged with creating a testing a model to restore the operational
capability of the Transonic Dynamics Tunnel.

The Partnership with Utopia Planitia Films involved a Space Act Agreement
with a production company to film "The Box," a remake of an old Twilight
Zone episode, but now in movie form and set in the Hampton-Richmond area in
the 1970s.
"It's the first time part of a feature film has been done at Langley," Rink
said.
The film is set for release on March 20, 2009.
