More than 50 students were recognized for their ability to turn NASA’s "green" efforts into multi-colored art.
The 2010 NASA Green Art Contest invited students near Langley to portray how the agency encourages inspiration, innovation and discovery to build a better world that is full of new opportunities, technologies and knowledge for improving life.
Students were asked to choose a theme from climate change, energy conservation, environment, technology or transportation. About 200 entries were submitted.
"I made a few drawings and didn’t like them," said Kira Pavlock, a home-schooled student who entered the contest. She made a few more drawings until she felt confident with her submission. She turned in her final draft on Oct. 29, the due date.
Her efforts to perfect her drawing of NASA's conservation efforts on the International Space Station paid off. She won for the sixth grade and her drawing will be displayed in the 2010 Get Ready, Get Set, Go Green Calendar, along with the other winners' art.
At Grafton Bethel Elementary, art teacher Teena McClaire, made the contest into a school project for the children, providing them with videos and background information. "It's important to mix art with other areas of education," McClaire said. Three of her students won for their grade levels: Maile Schalm for kindergarten, Caroline Beard for second grade and Caitlin Allen for third grade.
"I like learning about NASA," Allen said. "And drawing about it, too."
The contest winners, along with their families, educators, and administrators have been invited to attend a special award ceremony on February 5 at the Virginia Air and Space Center (VASC). The artwork of the winners will be on display at the VASC from Feb. 5 through Dec. 31.
