Surendra N. Tiwari passed away on June 10, 2008.
Dr. Surendra Tiwari, resident of Yorktown, passed away at 1:10 pm, Tuesday, June 10, 2008. Dr. Tiwari was born and grew up in India where he received his early education, followed by two M.S. degrees from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. from the State University of New York. Dr. Tiwari was a Professor at Old Dominion University for 35 years where he became an Eminent Professor and was awarded the Morgan Professorship. He received numerous academic awards throughout his career. Dr. Tiwari was an internationally recognized leader in a broad range of engineering disciplines. He was recipient of numerous research grants and authored/coauthored more than 400 research publications and 10 books. He was inducted into the Department of Mechanical Engineering Hall of Fame at the Old Dominion University. He mentored more than a 100 graduate students, more than 40 of whom received Ph.D. under his direction.
Dr. Tiwari, Professor Emeritus (Eminent Scholar prior to his retirement) at Old Dominion University was the long-time Co-Director for the NASA faculty program (ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program and then renamed the NASA Faculty Fellowship Program), as well as Director for the ISET and ICAM Programs.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, June 12th, at Weymouth Funeral Home, 12746 Nettles Drive, Newport News, VA 23606. Family will receive friends at the family home, 406 Rock Creek Court, Yorktown, VA 23693, after the funeral until 7:00 pm (872-4981).
Memorial donations may be made to the Old Dominion University Educational Foundation, 4417 Monarch Way, Norfolk, VA 23529 towards Tiwari Endowed Graduate Scholarship-Mechanical Engineering.
