Frederick Joseph Hines, 80, passed away on Feb. 27, 2009.
He was born and raised in Newport News, Va., and graduated from Peninsula Catholic High School. After two years in the Navy, he returned to the Peninsula for post graduate courses at Warwick High School to begin his career at NASA.
Fred had a long and productive career at NASA, Langley Research Center (LRC) in Hampton, Va. He graduated from the LRC Apprentice School in 1953, as an electrical technician and he retired in 1989, with more than 40 years of government service. Early in his career, Fred was assigned to the Scout Missile Launch and Tracking System Project, where he served in the Quality Assurance Group. Fred was involved in numerous experimental, aeronautical research facilities at LRC. In the latter part of his career, Fred attained the positions of Head, Laboratories Operations Branch and the Electrical Support Branch. Fred received many awards in recognition of his support to various research facilities at LRC. Fred is best remembered as a talented people manager and for having a wonderful sense of humor.
As a Civil War enthusiast, Fred joined the York Rangers in 1984 and participated competitively in the North-South Skirmish Association's shooting-sports activities, both locally and nationally.
Viewing will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 6, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2150 Cunningham Drive, Hampton. Interment will be private in Peninsula Memorial Park.
