Chieko Kittaka
 
Chieko Kittaka, a senior scientist working for Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI), supporting NASA programs, was found deceased in her home on March 18, 2009, in Yorktown, Va.

Chieko Kittaka. Chieko was born Dec. 31, 1964, in Hiroshima, Japan, and she began a distinguished career in atmospheric research at the Tokyo Metropolitan University where she earned BS and MS degrees. She completed her PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and for the last eight years supported NASA Langley Research Center. Chieko made many lasting contributions to the science community's understanding of the atmospheric processes affecting air quality. Chieko was a highly respected scientist and wonderful friend to her many colleagues, and she brightened the days of everyone she met with her bright smile and cheerful spirit.

"Our hearts are heavy with sadness at the loss of an exceptional scientist, a dear friend, and a spirited teammate. Chieko became an instant friend to all she met with her contagious smile and enthusiasm. She made significant scientific contributions for NASA, NOAA, and EPA projects that will continue to advance our knowledge in the areas of air quality and climate change for years to come," said Pat Lucker, Kittaka's supervisor with SSAI.

She is survived by her parents Masaki and Ikue Kittaka of Osaka, Japan.
