NASA Education Day at CIAA Brings Motivational Speaker, NASCAR Driver

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The 2012 CIAA Basketball Tournament doesn't just offer college games, it also offers area middle school students the opportunity to learn more about NASA and NASCAR during the CIAA Education Day.

When? Journalists are invited to the NASA-sponsored event held Wednesday, Feb. 29, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Charlotte Convention Center.

What? The annual event draws around 2,000 students and exposes them to motivational speakers, exciting NASA exhibits like "From Rockets to Racecars" and college booths.

Following performances by area step teams, cheerleaders and a band, students will hear from speaker Calvin Mackie who will get the students excited about science, technology, engineering and math, as well as from NASCAR driver Ryan Gifford who competes in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and last year finished the season in the top 10 in points.

Media interested in attending should contact Amy Johnson at 757-272-9859 or amy.johnson@nasa.gov
