Local media are invited to watch the final minutes of countdown for NASA's launch of Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-121) with NASA Langley Research Center employees.
The Reid Conference Center will open at 2:30 p.m. EDT for employees to watch the 3:49 p.m., July 1 launch on a large viewing screen; the launch window is approximately five minutes. NASA Langley's News Media Office will issue a Media Advisory if this schedule changes.
Media interested in attending should contact Chris Rink from the News Media Office at 344-7711 and plan to be at NASA Langley's main gate no later than 2:45 p.m.
A team of Langley managers, researchers and other personnel are supporting various aspects of Discovery's flight. The mission is the 115th Shuttle flight and 18th U.S. flight to the International Space Station. The 12-day mission has a planned Kennedy Space Center landing in Florida at approximately 10:45 a.m. EDT, July 13.
For this second Return to Flight launch and similar to last year's mission, the Discovery's crew will test new equipment and procedures to increase Shuttle safety, and deliver spare parts and supplies to the Station.
