RELEASE NO. 02-070

For Release:   Aug. 1, 2002

NOTE TO EDITORS: DIVERSITY DAY 2002
NASA Langley celebrates its diverse work force August 2

NASA Langley Research Center’s Diversity Awareness Committee (DAC) will sponsor the Center’s third annual Diversity Day celebration at 11:30 a.m., Aug. 2, on the picnic grounds of the H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.

This year’s event will feature a variety of cultural displays and demonstrations, a cultural fashion show and performances by Langley employees sharing their talents, a presentation by NASA Langley’s Child Development Center and an assortment of ethnic food samplings.

To heighten disability awareness, non-disabled employees will be asked to consider the challenges faced by people who have certain limitations. The challenge will consist of a mock wheelchair obstacle course, a computer simulation of different levels of hearing loss, and specially designed goggles to simulate a variety of visual impairments.

The keynote speaker will be Mr. Ron Villanueva, City Councilman for Virginia Beach, Virginia. He will share his vision of working in a harmonious work environment. "The purpose of Diversity Day is to promote appreciation of our differences and to celebrate our diverse cultural backgrounds," says James Fields, Diversity Day chairperson.

Members of the media are invited to attend and should contact Kimberly W. Land, (757) 864-9885 or (757) 344-8611, for proper credentials.
