RELEASE NO. 01-083

For Release:   July 31, 2001

NASA Langley celebrates its diverse work force August 3

NASA Langley Research Center’s Multicultural Leadership Team (MCLT) will sponsor the Center’s second annual Diversity Day celebration at 11 a.m., Aug. 3, on the picnic grounds of the H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.

This year’s event will feature a variety of cultural displays and demonstrations, a cultural fashion show and performances by Desert Wind dancers, the Hellenic Youth Dancers, the Suwabi African Ballet and Langley employees performing their various talents. A Disabilities Awareness booth will also be available to cover such topics as diabetes, heart disease, non-paralytic impairments, etc., during the program.

The keynote speaker will be Mr. Kelly Wright, co-anchor of "Fox43 News at 10," on Fox WVBT channel 43. He will share his vision of working in a harmonious work environment. "The purpose of Diversity Day is to promote appreciation of our differences and to celebrate our diverse cultural backgrounds," says James Fields, Diversity Day chairperson.

"Last year’s event was the first of its kind held at Langley," says Fields. Diversity Day 2001 has gained increased employee and contractor participation as well as participation from other NASA Centers, city and officials, Langley Air Force Base, and Ft. Monroe.

Diversity Day is in alignment with NASA’s mission to create an environment that demonstrates a commitment to multicultural values and fosters innovation, respect, trust, teamwork and continuous improvement within the workplace.

The general public is invited to the event. Members of the media who wish to attend should contact Kimberly W. Land (757) 864-9885 or at k.w.land@larc.nasa.gov.
