RELEASE NO. 98-093A

Sigma Series lecture,VASC, at 7:30 p.m.

Colloquium Features Russian Flight Test Exchange: Rogers E. Smith

A NASA pilot who flew the Russian Mig fighter in a test pilot exchange program will share his experiences at a colloquium Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. in the H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.

Rogers E. Smith, acting director of Flight Operations at Dryden Flight Research Center in Edwards, Calif., flew the Mig-29 and SU-27 aircraft as part of the exchange. His talk will cover design philosophy, pilot training differences and the performances of the aircraft. He also hosted a Russian pilot at Dryden and will discuss that visit as well.

Smith was associated with Langley in 1967 as a research pilot, and has specialized in advanced flight control systems, stability and control and flying qualities. He is a co-project pilot on two major aeronautical programs at Dryden; the integrated thrust vectoring F-15 "ACTIVE" and the SR-71 High-Speed Research programs.

A media briefing will be held at 1:15 p.m. in the Wythe Room of the Reid Conference Center, 14 Langley Blvd. in Hampton. The general public is invited to the Sigma Series lecture at the Virginia Air and Space Center at 7:30 p.m. that day.

Media who wish to attend the briefing should contact Janice Johnson at (757) 864-6124.
