NOTE TO EDITORS:

6th Annual National Spaceweek Picnic and Model Rocket Launch

The NASA Langley Chapter of the National Space Society will hold its annual picnic and model rocket launch Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the NASA Langley H.J.E. Reid Conference Center. Last year, more than 200 children and adults built and launched model rockets in celebration of National Spaceweek.

National Space Week is a nationwide celebration of the anniversaries of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon (July 20, 1969), the Apollo-Soyuz docking (July 17, 1975) and the Viking landing on Mars (July 20, 1976).

Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts can use this event to help fulfill the requirements for their space exploration badges. Participants can purchase and build model rockets at the event or bring their own rockets. Volunteers will be available to help with the construction of the rocket kits.

In addition, a high-power model rocket built by the NASA Langley National Space Society also will be on display. This rocket has been launched several times, reaching heights of more than 2,000 feet. The NASA Langley chapter has helped two local high schools build and launch similar rockets.

Interviews and photo opportunities are available.
