Discovery is scheduled to be transferred at midnight to the Vehicle Assembly Building. While inside the VAB, the 100-ton spaceplane will be bolted to its already stacked solid rocket boosters and external tank.

Testing of the Astro-2 payload is planned this week. The three main engines are scheduled to be installed next week. The crew equipment interface test is scheduled next week. Atlantis is targeted to be ready for transfer to the VAB by the end of January.

MISSION: STS-71 -- 1st MIR DOCKING

VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104
LOCATION: OPF bay 3
TARGET LAUNCH PERIOD: late May
APPROX. LAUNCH TIME: early morning
LAUNCH WINDOW: 5 minutes
KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: TBD
MISSION DURATION: 9 days, 20 hours
CREW SIZE: 7 up, 8 down
ORBITAL ALTITUDE: 196-245 statute miles
INCLINATION: 51.60 degrees

Heat shields are being removed to prepare for removal of the three main engines next week. Fuel cell No. 2 is being replaced this week. The orbiter is targeted to be ready for rolling out of the OPF by mid-April.
