April 12, 2010 Tracy Young Kennedy Space Center, Fla. 321-867-2468 tracy.g.young@nasa.gov RELEASE: 22-10 LOCAL STUDENT INTERNS AT NASA'S KENNEDY SPACE CENTER CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Skyler Mondell of West Palm Beach, Fla., has spent almost four months providing mechanical design support to the prototype development laboratory at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla. Mondell, a member of NASA's Undergraduate Student Research Program is assigned to the materials science division of the engineering department. His work involves using engineering mechanics to develop new concepts for various ongoing projects. These concepts are modeled using computer-aided design software and later fabricated for testing at the lab. The program offers students internships in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, also known as STEM disciplines. It is part of NASA's education strategy to attract and retain students pursuing STEM careers. The internship is designed to provide selected participants the ultimate workforce preparatory experience. Mondell is a 2005 graduate of Royal Palm Beach High School. He attends Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., where he is pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering. His parents, Tad and Karen Mondell reside in West Palm Beach.
