In 1996, he transferred to the Payload Processing Directorate to work as a payload operations engineer, where he was responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordination of payload assembly and test operations. He was promoted through several positions in the Payloads organization before being selected as a mission manager in 2005.
Ashley is currently assigned to the STS-119/ISS-15A mission and the STS-132/UFL-4 mission. Previous mission assignments as mission manager include STS-115/ISS-12A and STS-117/ISS-13A.
