Materials Technologies

New materials that are strong, lightweight, and versatile are in constant demand for NASA missions. Recent research at Johnson Space Center has included development of new aluminum materials for friction stir welding, nanotechnology, and other materials.

Featured Technologies

  • Nano- Encapsulated Aerogel

This patented nano-encapsulated aerogel technology was developed by engineers at the Johnson Space Center. Aerogel, nicknamed solid smoke, has been used in a variety of space missions for its properties as the lowest-density solid known.

More Available Technologies

  • Heat Treatment Restores Strength to Friction-Stir-Welded 7X50 Aluminum

A new method for heat treating friction stir welded plates made of 7X50 aluminum alloy reverses the deleterious effects of welding and restores the alloy’s mechanical properties. The method increases tensile and yield strengths, minimizes or eliminates stress corrosion cracking, and increases ductility over non-treated welded plates.
