Innovation Lecture Series : Embracing Open Source at IBM with Linux

Dr. Bob Sutor, VP of Open Source and Linux at IBM Software Group

Dr. Bob Sutor, IBM

Dr. Sutor presented information on open source and cloud computing to a NASA community that included the SLSD, JSC, and other NASA centers. The presentation at the Innovation Lecture Series was well received and gave the audience a look into why open source software is important. Dr. Sutor stressed the importance of forming healthy, diversified communities consisting of non-paid contributors in order to be successful at open source and "giving things away for free." IBM uses open source in a variety of ways and provides for collaborations to be formed, just as in proprietary software. Dr. Sutor also discussed the culture issues that go along with open source and ways IBM overcame those hurdles, including education courses for all its employees. For more information, please see Dr. Sutor's presentation and view the video of the January 20, 2010 Innovation Lecture Series.
