    About the Flight Analogs / Bed Rest Project




    Standard Conditions



    Conditions:

    • Environmental: 68 to 76°F and 40 to 60% relative humidity
    • Bed position: 6-degree head-down tilt, continuous for the duration of the study
    • Duration: 60 to 90 days
    • Wake: 0600, light out 2200 hrs (strictly enforced, no napping)
    • Daily vitals:
      • Blood pressure
      • Heart rate
      • Body temperature
      • Respiratory rate
      • Body weight (bed scale)
    • Maintenance of body weight with standardized diet
    • Daily stretching exercises
    • Massage therapy every other day during bed rest
    • Visits from the psychological support team for subject support
    • Daily attending physician visit
    • Daily stool softener
    • Measurement of fluid intake and output
    • Subjects are encouraged to be active in bed, using arms but not legs.


    Diet:

    • Standardized diet
    • Baseline caloric intake 35.7 kcal/kg body wt (2500 calories/70 kg subject)
    • Fluid intake of 28.5 mL/kg body wt (2000 mL/70 kg subject)
    • Carbohydrate:fat:protein ratio - 55:30:15
      • Phosphorus - 1400 mg/day
      • Sodium - 2 mmol/kg/day
      • Potassium - 1.3 mmol/kg/day
      • Calcium - 1000 mg/day
    • No caffeine, cocoa, chocolate, tea or herbal beverage
    • Caloric intake adjusted to maintain body weight
