Houston High Schoolers Create Astronaut Training Tools
Houston area high school students will present to NASA training equipment they built for International Space Station astronauts in a 10 a.m. Monday, April 30, ceremony at Chaves High School.
The ceremony will be in the high school's auditorium, 8501 Howard St. in Houston. Media are invited and should contact the Houston Independent School District Office of Communications, 713-556-6981, no later than 9:30 a.m. April 30 if planning to attend.
The student-built equipment has been constructed under a unique program offered by NASA to high school students across the nation called High school students United with NASA to Create Hardware (HUNCH). The partnership gives students hands-on experience designing and constructing training hardware for station and provides NASA a significant reduction in the cost of the training gear.
The students' products include replicas of station rack power smoke indicator units, internal vehicular activity handrails and four treadmill vibration isolation system rope assemble units. Other hardware fashioned by the students includes station U.S. Destiny laboratory mock-ups. This year, the program includes one school in Montana and 10 schools from the Houston area in three districts: Clear Creek, Cypress-Fairbanks and Houston.
The guest speaker is Kelly Trlica, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. NASA Space Station Program Manager Michael Suffredini and NASA Space Life Sciences Director Jeff Davis will accept the hardware from the students. HUNCH Project Manager Stacy Hale also will address students on their contributions to the nation’s space program. Following the ceremony, students will be available to talk about their work, which will be showcased throughout the auditorium and stage before and after the event.
