Houston Events Mark 25th Anniversary of First Shuttle

NASA's Johnson Space Center will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first space shuttle flight April 12 with a commemorative event, a news conference with the first crew, and a discussion of memories of the historic flight.

The day begins at 9 a.m. CDT at Space Center Houston with a commemoration of the flight honoring the crew, Commander John Young and Pilot Bob Crippen, and all those that made it possible. Though not open to the public, the event will be broadcast live on NASA Television. Media are invited.

Along with Young and Crippen, NASA Administrator Michael Griffin, JSC Director Mike Coats and members of Congress will honor the achievements of STS-1 during the observance. Immediately following the ceremony, Griffin and the members of Congress will be available to media.

Media planning to attend this or any of the April 12 events should contact the JSC Newsroom at (281) 483-5111 by 4 p.m. CDT Tuesday, April 11.

At 10:45 a.m. CDT in JSC's Teague Auditorium, Young and Crippen will participate in a news conference. The news conference will be broadcast live on NASA Television. Questions will be taken from reporters at JSC, the Kennedy Space Center and NASA Headquarters as time permits.

At 11:30 a.m. CDT, Young, Crippen, former shuttle managers Bob Thompson and Aaron Cohen, and STS-1 Flight Director Neil Hutchinson will hold a storytelling session to remember the flight for JSC employees. Media may attend the hour-long event, also in JSC's Teague Auditorium. The session will be broadcast live on NASA Television.

NASA TV's Public, Education and Media channels are available on an MPEG-2 digital C-band signal accessed via satellite AMC-6, at 72 degrees west longitude, transponder 17C, 4040 MHz, vertical polarization. In Alaska and Hawaii, they're on AMC-7 at 137 degrees west longitude, transponder 18C, at 4060 MHz, horizontal polarization. For digital downlink information, visit:
