Rescheduled Mir Internal Spacewalk Preview Briefing Set

A detailed look at the planned internal spacewalk by Mir 24 Commander Anatoly Solovyev and Flight Engineer Pavel Vinogradov to reconnect power cables from the damaged Spektr module on the Mir space station will be the subject of a rescheduled NASA briefing now planned for Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 12 noon CDT.

The internal spacewalk will be conducted from the transfer node of the Mir on Friday, Aug. 22. Officials are still assessing the exact times for the activity.

NASA's Deputy Shuttle-Mir Phase One Program Manager, Jim Van Laak, and Greg Harbaugh, the Acting Manager of the Johnson Spacewalk Projects Office, will conduct the briefing, which will be broadcast on NASA Television with two-way question and answer capability for reporters at participating NASA centers.

The briefing will take place following a comprehensive review of the procedures and plans for the spacewalk which will be held earlier in the day in a readiness review by Van Laak and Valery Ryumin, the Russian Program Manager for the Shuttle-Mir program. The readiness review and the briefing were both postponed from Monday to Wednesday due to Russian operational activity aboard the Mir.

NASA Television is carried on GE-2, Transponder 9C at 85 degrees West longitude, vertical polarization, frequency 3880 Mhz, audio 6.8 Mhz.
