Davis Begins New Assignment

Astronaut N. Jan Davis, Ph.D., has accepted an assignment as Director, Human Exploration and Development of Space (HEDS) Independent Assurance.

In her new position, Davis will manage and direct the independent assessment and oversight activities for the agency’s HEDS programs, reporting to the Associate Administrator for the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance at NASA Headquarters.

A three-time shuttle veteran, Davis flew most recently as the payload commander for STS-85, a 12-day mission focusing on astronomical research and NASA’s continuing Mission to Planet Earth, studying the Earth’s environment. Her two previous flights were STS-47, a life sciences and materials processing mission, in September 1992, and STS-60, the first flight of the Wake Shield Facility in February 1994.

Davis remains on active flight status while supporting this detached assignment. For complete biographical information on Davis or any astronaut, see the NASA Internet astronaut biography home page at URL: http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/
