Campion Named to Head Johnson Space
Center Media Relations Area
Edward S. Campion has been named chief of the Operations and Program
Support Branch, Office of Public Affairs, at the Johnson Space
Center.
The Operations and Program Support Branch oversees media relations,
video and television production and still photography production
activities at JSC. Campion previously served as chief of news
operations within the branch and replaces John Lawrence, who retired
from NASA on April 3. Campion has served as acting branch chief since
that date.
Campion has extensive experience in national media relations,
government and community relations with more than 15 years of
experience in NASA public affairs. He worked at NASA Headquarters in
Washington D.C. From May 1982 until November 1996 when he transferred
to JSC. His responsibilities in Washington included serving as the
Headquarters Public Affairs Officer for the Office of Space Flight
from November 1989 to November 1996 during which time he coordinated
agency PAO strategy for almost 50 Space Shuttle missions.
From late 1984 to January 1986, he served as the lead public affairs
spokesperson for NASA’s Teacher in Space Project, coordinating
media activity during the TSP national selection process. Following
the selection of Christa McAuliffe and Barbara Morgan as prime and
backup candidates, Campion continued overseeing TSP public affairs
during mission training in preparation for the launch of Challenger
on Mission STS 51-L. Following the Challenger accident,. Campion was
a part of the NASA team supporting the Rogers Commission.
Campion is a native of Virginia. He graduated from Annandale High
School, Annandale, Virginia in 1977 and received a Bachelor of
Science degree in Communications from James Madison University,
Harrisonburg, VA in 1981. He is a also a former Director and Vice
President with the Arlington Virginia Junior Chamber of Commerce.
