Space Shuttle Orbiter/747
Space Shuttle Orbiter/747
Space Shuttle Orbiter/747 In 1977, the glide characteristics of the Space Shuttle Orbiter "Enterprise" were tested over the California desert at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center. The orbiter was attached to the top of a modified 747 jet liner, flown to an altitude of over 20,000 feet and released to glide to a landing in the dry lakebed below. Thirteen of these flight tests occurred. All orbiters will be ferried from the assembly plant or landing sites to test and launch locations on top of the 747 aircraft.
