Aeroscience and Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory

    The Aeroscience and Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (AeroLab) provides computational resources to assist in studies of fluid dynamics, aerodynamics and aerothermodynamics. Much of the work in the lab involves interactive computer graphics and includes CAD model generation, CFD grid generation, and flowfield visualization. In addition, the computers are configured to provide a parallel-computing environment for large scale simulations. These include Direct Simulation Monte Carlo analyses of low density flows as well as traditional CFD computations.

    Previous analyses in the lab include Space Shuttle ascent aerodynamics and heating environments, aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic characterization of the Orion spacecraft and its launch abort system configuration, aerodynamic interactions of aircraft/payload separation, studies of on-orbit rocket plume effects during rendezvous and docking, and the design and analysis of numerous wind tunnel test campaigns. Tools developed in the AeroLab are being applied at other NASA Centers and in industry.
