KINISHBA FIRE AND HURRICANE CLAUDETTE
Images of the Kinishba Fire on the Fort Apache Reservation, northeast of Phoenix, Ariz., July 16, 2003. Hurricane Claudette remnants over west Texas are also visible.
National Interagency Fire Center officials report that the Kinshba Fire on the Fort Apache Reservation northeast of Phoenix, Ariz., grew to over 17,500 acres by 10:30 p.m. July 16, and it was 15% contained. The fire threatens at least 700 residences; officials are evacuating over 5,000 people. The Sea-viewing Wide-field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) aboard the Orbview-2 satellite took this image 12:30 p.m. local time on July 16. The remnants of Hurricane Claudette can be seen over west Texas, which fire officials hope will help douse the Kinishba flames. The fire is very near the site of last year's Rodeo-Chedeski blaze, in the upper left of the close-up image here.
