Winds continue to hamper firefighters' progress battling Arizona's Aspen Fire northeast of Tucson in the Coronado National Forest. By early on June 24, 2003, the fire had charred more than 19,000 acres since its June 17 start from unknown causes. The fire also burned hundreds of homes, other structures, and pine forests on Mount Lemmon. As of early on June 24, the fire is roughly 15 percent contained. These images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on June 23, 2003 show the Aspen Fire.

FIRE GROWS OVER WEEKEND

This animated GIF shows a series of MODIS images from Aqua and Terra show the growth of the Aspen Fire over the weekend of June 19-23, 2003. Other smaller fires in the area are also visible.
