Glenn Research Center Plans Open Houses as Part of NASA's 50th Anniversary Celebration

Cleveland-Plans are underway for public open houses at NASA's Glenn Research Center Lewis Field in Cleveland on May 17 and 18 and Plum Brook Station in Sandusky on May 31 and June 1. The hours for each day of the two events will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

These events are part of a year-long celebration leading up to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's 50th anniversary on Oct. 1, 2008. They will look back at NASA's 50 years of scientific and technological excellence and look forward to a promising new era of discovery.

Glenn's open houses will offer a fun and exciting way to engage, educate and inspire the public. Among the things to do and see are:

  • Tour research facilities at Lewis Field including wind tunnels used to develop and verify cutting-edge technologies for use in aeronautics, aerospace and space. At Plum Brook tour the Space Power Facility where research has been done involving the space station and Mars rovers and where tests will be done on NASA's new rockets that will travel to the moon and beyond.
  • Talk to and ask questions of the engineers, scientists and technical personnel who work in the facilities to learn about the exciting work being done right here in Ohio.
  • See NASA aircraft used for flight research involving solar cell calibration, sensor development, aircraft icing and environmental research.
  • Take part in hands-on, educational activities for children.
  • Attend special presentations at the Visitor Center at Lewis Field.
Admission ls free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, along with space-themed souvenirs and NASA merchandise.

Detailed information will be forthcoming closer to the events. The open house website at http://nasa50th.grc.nasa.gov will provide information on security clearance, transportation and items to bring in preparation for the visit.

Media outlets interested in further information about the upcoming open houses or story ideas should contact Sally Harrington at 216-433-2037.
