Rachul Media Relations Office 216-433-8806 lori.j.rachul@nasa.gov RELEASE: 06-064 YOUNG ASTRONAUTS MAKE ANNUAL VISIT TO NASA GLENN Buses loaded with over 350 students from 20 schools throughout Ohio will arrive at NASA's Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, on November 4 for a day of events and activities involving engineering and scientific challenges. This 14th annual Young Astronaut Day will be held Nov. 4 from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Student teams will compete in activities such as Mars Entry, Descent and Landing, where younger students will build a parachute with shock absorbers, and Space Spud, in which protective spacesuits will be developed to protect a potato space man from meteorite impacts. The day will begin with Ohio Astronaut Michael Good greeting the students in the Developmental Engineering Building Auditorium. Good was just named one of the astronauts scheduled to service the Hubble Space Telescope sometime in 2008. NASA Glenn scientists and engineers will then provide instructions and a summary of the day's events. Pilots (6th grade and younger) will meet in Glenn's Developmental Engineering Building Cafeteria, while Commanders (7th through 12th grades) will convene in the Main Cafeteria to take part in competitive activities. Good is a graduate of Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School and is an Air Force colonel and weapons' systems officer. He graduated from the Air Force Test Pilot School, having logged more than 2,100 hours in 30 different types of aircraft. He was selected as a mission specialist by NASA in July 2000. This year's event is sponsored by Glenn's Aeronautics Division and the Northern Ohio section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
