GRC NEWS RELEASE 03-011 03-011 For Release: February 19, 2003 Sally V. Harrington Media Relations Office 216/433-2037 Sally.V.Harrington@nasa.gov Local Schools Visited During National Engineers Week What do engineers do? This week many engineers will share their experiences and enthusiasm for the profession with students at 79 local elementary, middle and high schools. During National Engineers Week, February 16-22, more than 60 engineers and scientists from NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland will seek to open the minds of the younger students to the wonders of science and math and inspire the middle and high school students to pursue careers in the fields of engineering and science. This program of classroom visits is part of the National Engineers Week activities in the Cleveland area and is supported by Glenn's Office of Educational Programs in conjunction with the Cleveland Area National Engineers Week Committee. The National Society of Professional Engineers established National Engineers Week in 1951. Its purpose is to increase public awareness and appreciation of the engineering profession. Engineers are practical inventors who use science and technology to turn ideas into reality, making our lives easier, healthier, more production and fun. Each year National Engineers Week takes place at the time of George Washington's birthday. His agricultural, military and land-surveying skills led to his acquiring the title of our nation's first engineer. He directed a growing society toward technical advancements, invention and education. An order issued by George Washington in June 1778 called for engineers and engineering education and is considered to be the origin of the U.S. Army Engineer School. Note to Editors: To determine which schools are participating in this year's program, please refer to the attached list. Media representative interested in covering these visits will need to make arrangements directly with the schools involved.
