GRC NEWS RELEASE 02-031 02-031 For Release: April 25, 2002 Sally V. Harrington Media Relations Office 216/433-2037 Sally.V.Harrington@nasa.gov An Earth Week Lesson With Images From Space In celebration of Earth Week 2002, hundreds of students across the country will be participating in a distance-learning program, Observing Earth from Space, hosted by NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland using images of Earth taken from a satellite. On Friday, April 26, at 1 p.m. EDT, an interactive lesson, utilizing LANDSAT-7 images video-streamed over the Internet, will be distributed to preregistered students in grades K-12. During the webcast, students across the country will interact with scientists from University of Toledo and Miami University, who will be located at Glenn. On Saturday, April 27, at noon EDT, SEMAA (Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy) students nationwide in grades 7 through 9 will participate in a similar webcast. During this webcast, SEMAA students will interact with scientists from the Ohio State University, Miami University, and Kent State University. SEMAA provides a greater appreciation for science, engineering and mathematics to K-12 grade students in a hands-on, inquiry-based, cooperative learning environment Saturday mornings during the academic year. In both webcasts the students and their teachers will learn how NASA satellites observe Earth from space and what kind of remote sensing research is currently being done. Students and teachers will also be introduced to a "user-friendly" web page that can be used in the classroom. The students involved on Friday have been working on a "Students as Scientists" project involving verifying information about the climate conditions in their area against that data being reported by earth observing satellites over the past two winter. During the webcast they will hear what was learned through their observations. They will be invited to participate in a similar program in the fall. On Saturday, the students will observe the student audience at Glenn participate in two experiments utilizing remote sensing. Note to Editors and News Directors: Media representatives interested in this program are welcome to observe it at Glenn, at participating schools or at the SEMAA sites. To arrange for clearance through Security at Glenn or for more information about the program, please contact Sally Harrington or the Media Relations Office at (216) 433-2901. To arrange for coverage at a school or SEMAA site, please contact the school directly. A list of the schools and SEMAA sites participating in this program follows.
