Rachul Media Relations Office 216/433-8806 Lori.J.Rachul@nasa.gov Women Demonstrate American Spirit During Heritage Month Female forerunners of the past and present will be on hand as NASA's Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, celebrates this year's Women's History Month theme "Women Sustaining the American Spirit" on Thursday, March 28 from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. in its Administration Building Auditorium. Glenn has invited Mary Bounds, Cleveland's first female Chief of Police, and current commander of recruitment and retention, Cleveland Division of Police, to be keynote speaker. Bounds will discuss women's individual abilities to make differences in their lives by providing an account of her personal accomplishments and the role of women in law enforcement. Bounds is the recipient of numerous awards including Community Service Awards from local, state and national government. Due to overwhelming popularity, the Women in History Troupe, a dramatic group that specializes in portraying famous female role models of all eras, will make an encore performance. This year, the audience will learn about Rachel Carson (1907-1964), marine biologist, science writer and environmentalist, and Fannie Lou Hamer (1907-1977), civil rights activist, organizer of the Mississippi Freedom Party and field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. In addition, Glenn will honor its own with the annual presentation of its Federal Women's Program Awards in supervisory and non-supervisory categories. The awards recognize individuals who support and promote women's personal and professional advancement and are determined by Glenn's Office of Equal Opportunity Programs.
