Students Study Earth from Space 

Hundreds of students across the country will have an opportunity to 
study the Earth using images from space during an Earth Day 
distance-learning program hosted by NASA Glenn Research Center in 
Cleveland, OH.



On Friday, April 20, at 10:30 a.m. EDT an interactive lesson utilizing 
Landsat 7 images video streamed over the Internet will be available 
to registered 6th through 12th grade students in Ohio. The students 
will interact with an instructor located at Glenn. At 2:30 p.m. EDT a 
similar program will be presented to 6th through 12th grade students 
of the Choctaw Nation in southeast Oklahoma.



On Saturday, April 2l, at noon EDT the lesson will be provided to 7th 
and 8th grade SEMAA (Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace 
Academy) students nationwide. SEMAA provides a greater appreciation 
for science, engineering and mathematics to K-12th grade students in 
a hands-on, inquiry-based, cooperative learning environment Saturday 
mornings during the academic year.



The participants in the lessons will learn about the advantages and 
disadvantages of looking at the Earth from space and be introduced to 
remote sensing. They will also learn about the types of classes to 
take in high school to prepare for college and a career in remote 
sensing.



From a web site established for the program, registered students will 
be able to download, information and images that will be included in 
the lesson. In some cases the students will be referred to other web 
sites to get maps or images. Prior to the program, students will 
answer questions related to an image of Glenn taken from space and 
e-mail their answers to the Earth Day Program manager at Glenn. 
During the lesson, the Glenn image along with others will be 
interpreted. A Landsat image of Ohio will be used with the Ohio 
students and one of southeast Oklahoma with the Choctaw students.
