NASA Glenn Awards Contracts for Development of Fuel Injectors
Five contracts, totaling $12.5 million, were awarded as part of NASA
Glenn Research Center’s Ultra-Efficient Engine Technology
(UEET) program, for the development of revolutionary fuel
injector/mixers for future aircraft engine low-emission combustors.
The companies selected include Aerojet of Sacramento, CA; BFGoodrich
Aerospace of Des Moines, IA; Parker Hannifin Corporation of Andover,
OH; Sun Valley Technology Inc. of Warrensville Hts., OH; and Woodward
FST, Inc. of Zeeland, MI. The contract value for each is $2.5
million over the next five years.
The fuel/injector mixers designed and developed at each company will
then be tested in advanced combustor concepts at Glenn. Emissions
measurements will be taken to see if they are reducing
landing/takeoff NOx emissions by 70%, relative to 1996 International
Civil Aviation Organization standards, with no increase in other
emission constituents such as carbon monoxide and unburned
hydrocarbons.
“Fuel injectors/mixers are critical components in advanced
combustor concepts,” said Robert J. Shaw, UEET program manager.
“Revolutionary approaches need to be undertaken to achieve the
ambitious low-emission goals.”
The UEET program, managed by the Glenn Research Center, is developing
high-payoff, high-risk technologies that will enable the next
breakthroughs in propulsion systems. The products from UEET will
enable a new generation of high performance, operationally efficient
and economical, reliable and environmentally compatible U.S.
aircraft.
