NOTE TO EDITORS/NEWS DIRECTORS
TAKE OUR CHILDREN TO WORK DAY OBSERVED AT NASA GLENN
This year’s Take Our Children to Work Day at the NASA Glenn
Research Center will not simply show children of Center employees
what their parents do—it will ask them to be a part of the
action. Tuesday, April 27, will be a day brimming with hands-on
activities to perform, facilities to visit and presentations to
enjoy.
"Take Our Children to Work Day is the Center’s biggest event
involving children. It has grown from 100 child participants in 1994,
which was its first year, to a record-breaking 515 children last
year," said Alberta R. Gooden, Federal Women’s Program manager
and coordinator for this year’s event. "It’s an exciting
event because it really puts the work that parents do in perspective
for kids. For some, it’s their first time visiting the Center."
"Boomerangs Are Coming Back!" is the theme of this year’s
kick-off presentation. Gary Broadbent, boomerang instructor and
manufacturer, will speak at 9 a.m. and repeat his presentation at 11
a.m. in Glenn’s DEB Auditorium. Broadbent not only provides an
historical, artistic and scientific overview of boomerangs, but also
motivates and inspires with his message of taking what you do and
making it your living. The Echoliers, a choral group of 30 young
people from Mt. Vernon, OH, will begin each presentation with a
serenade.
Tours of Glenn facilities that show children their parents’
diverse areas of expertise will be conducted during the course of the
day, including the following locations: 2.2 Second Drop Tower;
Advanced Communications Technology Satellite Control Room;
Aeronautics Education Laboratory; Imaging Technology Center; and the
Icing Research Tunnel.
Some fun, new additions have been made to this year’s program.
There will be a scavenger hunt where children answer a list of
questions during the course of their day at Glenn in order to win
prizes. Also, there will be tables set up in Glenn’s Main
Cafeteria for participants to color and do other activities from 11
a.m. – 1 p.m.
Glenn’s Take Our Children to Work Day coincides with the
national program, Take Our Daughters to Work Day, which is sponsored
by the Ms. Foundation for Women. Take Our Daughters to Work Day is a
public campaign for keeping our girls strong and resilient. The
program encourages them to break down gender and racial barriers so
they too can take advantage of all educational and employment
opportunities. Glenn has extended its program to include all children
ages 9 – 15.
Media representatives interested in attending any of the activities
should call Barbara Kakiris (216/433-2513) or the Media Relations
Office (216/433-2901) in order to be cleared through security.
